At the end of June and the beginning of July, the Czech Republic will host the European Under-19 Football Championship, which has announced the composition of its preliminary groups. The draw for this year’s edition of the top tournament, which is traditionally held every year, was welcomed by the Clarion Hotel in Ostrava. It will be played in four cities of the Moravian-Silesian Region.
The ceremonial act of dividing the teams into individual groups was moderated by Petr Handl and the draw itself was taken by Baník Ostrava goalkeeper Jan Laštůvka. He is also the ambassador of the championship, in which eight teams are participating.
So how did the draw turn out? The Czechs were automatically seeded into Group A, which then included the Italians, Spanish and French. In 2019, the team from the Gallic cockerel country became the last team to win the trophy so far.
Group B will offer, among other things, a Nordic clash, as Sweden and Norway face off. They will be complemented by representatives of Western European football, namely England and Germany, which is the most successful country in the history of the championships with six triumphs.
The UEFA Women’s EURO was established in 1998 and has had a place in the sporting calendar every year since. The exception was the last two years, when the originally planned tournaments in Georgia and Belarus had to be cancelled due to a coronavirus pandemic.
The 2022 FIFA U19 Women’s European Championship will start on 26 June and the final will take place on 9 July in Opava. In addition, the host cities are Karviná, Frýdek-Místek and Ostrava, where the games will be played in two stadiums. In addition to the municipal stadium in Vítkovice, some matches will also be played at the reconstructed Bazaly stadium, which currently serves as the centre of the football academy.
However, this is not the first women’s football championship for the Czech Republic as the host country in recent times. In 2017, the European Under-17 Championship was held in the western Czech Republic. Back then, the final was won by the Germans, who defeated their Spanish opponents on penalties.
