Few can celebrate a victory in such style as the Athletic Club. The Bilbao side knocked out Atlético Madrid in the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup and will defend the trophy against Real Madrid in the final. The traditional trumpet of Asier Villalibre was not missing in the booth.
It all started last year. In the semi-finals of the Spanish Super Cup, Athletic knocked out Real Madrid, and in the final the Basques took on Barcelona.
The 24-year-old Athletic graduate Asier Villalibre equalised against Barcelona in stoppage time and showed after the game that he has other skills than just kicking the ball.
In fact, he took out his trumpet and led the celebrations of the enthusiastic Athletic players with it.
And it has become a tradition. Athletic celebrate all their victories in this way, and the Spanish media often ask about it. “ Yes, Villalibre brought his trumpet, it’s a tradition. We hope he will bring it out on Sunday.”
but the 24-year-old midfielder pulled it out a few days early. In Thursday’s semi-final, the Basques knocked out the reigning La Liga champions and that deserved a celebration.
Villalibre once again led the celebrations with his trumpet, much to everyone’s delight, and a video of the celebrations subsequently circulated all over Spain on the internet.
Will Villalibre play his trumpet again on Sunday? The final against Real Madrid is scheduled for 6pm.
