The seven-goal battle in Girona or How to work with the offside line?
The Premier League is on hiatus, but the quality football is clearly not going away. The match of the inserted round of La Liga between Girona and Atlético Madrid offered seven goals. What are the reactions to such a result and what to definitely notice about Wednesday’s match?

Girona’s clash with Atlético Madrid invited a shootout beforehand. After all, a month ago, the surprise of this season was a 4-2 draw with Barcelona, and this time, too, Girona opened the scoring account in the second minute with a beautiful shot by Valery Fernandez from the large whitewash.
The first half of the lucky strikers
Atlético reacted like an experienced team and quickly equalised, but Girona dominated at home and were already 3: 1 up in the 39th minute. Álvaro Morata shot the hope for Atleti in the second half, again after a run in behind the defence. Five goals in 45 minutes.
And three of them after millimetre-tight situations. Morata’s first shot was initially disallowed for offside, but a replay revealed otherwise. Daley Blind’s strike was a nil-nil situation in which the experienced Nizizeman was on the same level as the defending player. A similar nil-nil situation was on display in Liverpool’s battle with Arsenal in December.
Morata’s goal at 2:3, again a tight situation, which the Spaniard again kept out. “He was really a man out of place in terms of overcoming the offside line. He had a good eye today,” wrote YouTube user Christian Ebrahimovich in a really liked comment under the La Liga montage. He was responding to the fact that Morata has long been criticised for his offside work.
Something big is born by Girona
Morata equalised 3-3 after the change of sides. Third shot, third offside. This time he showed exactly what strikers are taught to do – charging sideways to stay offside for as long as possible. But even that wasn’t enough, Iván Martin decided the home team’s victory with a great shot.
The stadium exploded with enthusiasm, the head coach celebrated emotionally. “A minute of silence for all those who missed this incredible match. And respect for what Girona are doing,” wrote spectator Kensi. Girona remains tied for first place on points with Real Madrid.
“This Girona reminds me of Leicester a few years ago in the Premier League. It’s still along way to go and a lot of things can happen, but it’s nice to see these teams high up that no one would bet a peso on,” wrote Luis Fernando Arcemorera in a comment with more than a thousand likes.
