Blues under new ownership? Lots of money thrown away, but more or less no results. In the Premier League table, we’d be looking at Chelsea in 11th position. If they want a trophy, they need to win the Champions League. But now they’re facing Real Madrid.
This is the second time this season that a coach has been sacked. Thomas Tuchel was sacked early in the season and is now the new manager of Bayern Munich. He was replaced by Graham Potter, who had a great record at Brighton.
But Chelsea is not Brighton and Potter didn’t quite handle the engagement. The start wasn’t bad at all, but after a few games things started to fall apart and statistically the English coach is one of the worst men to have been on the Blues bench.
So it was no surprise when, after the national break, he was sacked after another unsuccessful game. However, it was debated whether this should have happened before the national break so that at least the new or interim coach could adjust a little.
But Chelsea have already had their first game without Potter and again without a win. A draw with a struggling Liverpool on home soil is not entirely to be welcomed, but it is not to be celebrated either. Bruno Saltor was on the bench.
What’s next? There are several options in play. The Blues are considering hiring several coaches. According to the British media, Julian Nagelsmann or, surprisingly, Luis Enrique are the favourites for a longer-term commitment.
But neither could take over in the event of a Chelsea deal this season. According to TalkSport, Frank Lampard, who has managed Chelsea in the past, is in the running to take over the team by the end of the season.
But the fact is that it could have a positive effect. After all, this is a man who knows the club better than anyone else. He has experienced it as a player and as a coach and could help stabilise the squad at the very least.
