Currently, FC Barcelona is in a major financial crisis. So much so that it has had great difficulty in even registering its new signings, who have come for free. However, this was not the case in the recent past. In this article, we take a look at how Palmeiras have burnt the Catalan club in relation to Matheus Fernandes.
On 30 January 2020, the then twenty-one-year-old Matheus Fernandes transferred to Barcelona from Palmeiras for €7 million. In addition to the fixed transfer fee, Barcelona paid another 3 million in bonuses.
A day later, the young Brazilian was sent on loan to Real Valladolid until 20 June. During the loan spell Fernandes only managed to play 3 matches, as the competition was then interrupted by a coronavirus.
On 29 June 2021, the Brazilian’s contract was unilaterally terminated by Barcelona. Fernandes signed for another club ten days later, and as some of you have probably guessed correctly, it was Palmeiras.
So it was a very good deal for the Brazilian club. One can also look at it as Palmeiras sent Fernandes on a year and a half away, collected 10 million, didn’t have to pay his wages and now the player has returned to them.
Moreover, Palmeiras can now boast that they have a Barcelona player at the club, even though he has only played 17 minutes in a Catalan jersey. Even so, the Itaboraí native can boast of having the Barcelona club mentioned on his CV.
Moreover, Matheus is only 23 years old, so Palmeiras after all either have a player for many years or they can do some good business with him again in the future. On the other hand, Barcelona has lost money and what would they give now even for the “stupid” 10 million.
