The former Chelsea star is out of contract. In 45 games, the Brazilian has scored just one goal, and fans have threatened him with death. Will he return to England?
Willian has had a successful career. However, when he left Chelsea two years ago, things started to go downhill. He didn’t do so well at Arsenal and the highlight of all was his engagement in Brazil, where he returned a year ago. Now he’s free. A return to England is in the cards.
Willian has had a successful career. However, when he left Chelsea two years ago, things started to go downhill. He didn’t do so well at Arsenal and the highlight of all was his engagement in Brazil, where he returned a year ago. Now he’s free. A return to England is in the cards.
He’s 34 years old, but the question is how many more seasons he has to play. After leaving Chelsea for Arsenal, Willian hasn’t exactly performed. His return to Corinthians, the Brazilian side that nurtured him, was also disappointing.
He was twice voted Chelsea’s best player. With the London club he won the Premier League twice, the Europa League once, the FA Cup and the League Cup. Before that, he won even more trophies with Shakhtar Donetsk. He also won the Copa América with Brazil.
He played 337 competitive matches for the Blues and 221 more for the Ukrainian side. That’s why Corinthians fans expected a lot from him when he returned to Brazil. But he scored only one goal in 45 games. His six assists didn’t improve his card.
Now Willian is a free agent. He has terminated his contract with the club. The reason is the fans. He said they threatened to kill him and his family.
“Whenever we lost and I didn’t play well enough, my family became the target of threats and insults on social media. Both my wife and my children. Recently, attacks have also started against my father or my sister,” the BBC quotes the Brazilian as saying.
“We are sad that he is no longer here. But also because his return has not gone as we expected,” Corinthians boss Duilio Monteiro Alves was quoted as saying.
What’s next? The Brazilian could potentially return to England. There is talk in the English media of interest from Fulham, who are Premier League newcomers again. He could certainly help the team with his experience.
