Wales and Denmark played the first match of this year’s European Championship. Kasper Dolberg scored two goals and the Danes deservedly advanced to the quarter-finals, where they will await their opponent from the match between the Netherlands and the Czech Republic.
The start of the match was cautious from both sides and chances were rarely taken. Bale had two shots from outside the box in the tenth minute, but both went wide.
The score changed in the 27th minute, when Denmark played a neat combination through the Welsh defence and Dolberg shot from outside the box to the far post. Goalkeeper Ward was short of his shot.
In the rest of the half, the Danes were the better side, but none of their shots led to a goal and the score at half-time was 1-0 to Denmark.
In the 49th minute the Danes took a two-goal lead. However, Welsh defender Williams, kicking the ball out of the box, only hit Dolberg, who shot past Ward for the second time.
The next big chance came in the 65th minute. The substitute Jensen centred the ball into the box, but it surprised not only goalkeeper Ward, but the poorly kicked centre hit the back post.
In the 80th minute Braithwaite had a chance from a direct free kick but sent the ball high over the bar. Five minutes later, the Barcelona striker had a huge chance again, but unfortunately for him, he only headed his shot into a half-empty net.
In the 88th minute, Denmark scored their third goal. Maehle received a beautiful pass, signalled a shot, laid off a defender and uncompromisingly shot past Ward. Two minutes later, he was brought down sharply from behind by Wilson, who was shown a red card for his tackle.
Denmark scored a fourth goal at the very end of the set-up. A neat combination found Cornelius Braithwaite, who made no mistake in finishing to send his team into a four-goal lead. The Danes deservedly advanced.
