Vladimír Darida started the turnaround of the underdog in Hertha Berlin’s match against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday. He assisted on the 1:1 goal and Hertha eventually took all three points from a thrilling match. Watch his pass.

Hertha were under pressure before Saturday’s game. They had only a two-point lead over 17th-placed Bielefeld, and only one point over 16th-placed Stuttgart. So if the Berliners wanted to have a quiet Christmas, they needed at least a draw.

Dortmund had the better of the first half, taking the lead thanks to Julian Brandt’s goal. After the change of sides, however, the home side came out swinging. It all started with an action in which the former captain of the Czech national team, Vladimir Darida, had a hand.

Darida’s clever pass behind the defence found Ishak Belfodil, the Turkish striker got to the whitewash and then sent the ball into the net with a ground shot. The black and yellow favourite got nervous and six minutes later he scored for the second time.

Marco Richter turned the tide with a successful shot from the edge of the box, and the same player headed the ball into a half-empty net in the 69th minute. Dortmund couldn’t recover and Steffen Tigges reduced the score to 2:3, but that was the best Marco Rose could do.

While Hertha jumped to eleventh place in the table with the win, Dortmund convinced themselves that the title is out of the question this season. After seventeen rounds, they are nine points behind Bayern.

It was Darida’s fifth league assist this season. So far, he has assisted two goals against Bochum and once against Frankfurt. After the New Year, the Viktoria Plzen alumnus will play against Cologne in Berlin.
