When Jesper Gronkjaer’s goal in 2003 secured Chelsea’s place in the Champions League, no one knew that it would become one of the most important in the club’s history.
It was this goal, and therefore promotion to the Champions League, that made Chelsea a much more attractive proposition for Roman Abramovich to buy. Indeed, the Russian billionaire made an offer worth £140 million in 2003.
Chelsea was also greatly helped to financial freedom by this move, because at that time the London club was heavily in debt. Let’s recap together the highlights of the 19 years of the Abramovich era.
The controversial purchase
When the opportunity presented itself in 2003, Abramovich didn’t hesitate for long. But back then, it wasn’t the Chelsea we know today.
While it was struggling to find a solid position, and had managed to win a few trophies, it was not in good financial shape and was heading for bankruptcy.
However, a Russian businessman took advantage of the situation and made his dream of owning a football club come true. Thanks to his considerable investment, Chelsea got out of financial difficulties almost immediately and became a world class club and brand.
The hiring of Mourinho
In 2004, Roman Abramovich decided to engage the then very promising manager Jose Mourinho. And it was definitely not a bad move.
The Portuguese manager made Chelsea, which until then belonged at most to the wider English top flight, a real big club.
Of course, he was also helped by star signings such as Didier Drogba and Ricardo Carvalho.
Mourinho’s second spell at the Blues was not as glorious, yet he still managed to lift the Premier League winners’ trophy above his head.
Twice European champions
2012 and 2021. These are years that will already be indelibly etched in the history of the London club. Chelsea managed to win twice despite being the underdog.
In 2012, they beat Bayern of Germany on penalties. With just a few minutes to go, few believed in a Chelsea turnaround. But Didier Drogba was up against it.
The man of key moments sent the ball past goalkeeper Neuer after a corner with an uncatchable header. Chelsea never faltered in the penalty shootout and lifted the trophy above their heads for the first time in their history.
Last year’s Champions League final was a little different. Yes, Chelsea were not the favourites, but they were still in control from the start and deservedly beat Manchester City.
