The end of a long era! Sean Dyche quits Burnley

Perhaps it seemed that something like this couldn’t even happen, that the Sean Dyche and Burnley connection would perhaps last forever. However, the opposite is true, this year’s poor season has seen Dyche sacked.

Burnley are not having a good season in the Premier League. The club from the North West of England is currently in 18th relegation place, 4 points behind the relegation zone.

In the last round the Clarets lost 0:2 to Norwich and that seems to have been fatal for Dyche. During yesterday morning the club announced that Dyche had been recalled.

“Firstly we would like to thank Sean and his coaching team for the achievements he has made over the past decade. During his time at Turf Moor he has earned respect on and off the pitch.”

“However, the results this season have not been satisfactory and although this has not been an easy decision to make, we feel we have made the right move,” chairman Alan Pace told the club website.

Sean Dyche joined Burnley in October 2012, it was only his second managerial reality, having previously only worked at Watford.

When he arrived at Turf Moor, the Clarets were 14th in the Championship and had the most goals conceded. In the 13/14 season the club were promoted to the Premier League from 2nd place, and even from 1st in the 15/16 season.

Since then, they have managed to stay in the top flight and have twice enjoyed Top 10 finishes, even finishing 7th in the 17/18 season, which meant a sensational Europa League appearance for Burnley.

The great job Dyche did at Burnley was praised by the likes of Gary Neville on Twitter::

Dyche’s achievements at Burnley are even more admirable when you consider that the club’s budget was among the smallest in the league, sometimes the smallest.

The most expensive signing in Burnley’s history is Ben Gibson at £15m (2018), an almost ridiculous transfer fee today.

Even given that, a lot of people don’t really understand the club’s decision. Jamie Carragher called it a joke, Gary Lineker chose a much harsher word.

There’s already speculation about Dyche’s replacement. Sam Allardyce is mentioned, who incidentally is linked with every club at the bottom of the Premier League that sacks a manager. But the bigger favourites are thought to be Chris Wilder and Wayne Rooney.

But whoever comes in won’t have it easy, replacing such a legend as Sean Dyche has been for the club is going to take some doing.

Until a new manager is appointed, U23 coach Mike Jackson and his staff will take over the club, with team captain Ben Mee also helping out.
