The Emery effect. No team in the PL has won more points since Emery came in than Aston Villa
When people talk about Unai Emery, they talk about one of the best Spanish coaches of recent years. But he was underestimated and ridiculed in England because of his failed Arsenal engagement, but after joining Aston Villa he is proving his quality.
When people talk about Unai Emery, they talk about one of the best Spanish coaches of recent years. But he was underestimated and ridiculed in England because of his failed Arsenal engagement, but after joining Aston Villa he is proving his quality.
What you probably remember most from Emery’s Arsenal engagement is the mockery of his English and coaching moves. But the Spanish coach has not had an easy role. He took over the team from Arsene Wenger and changing the established order after a coach who has been at the helm for 22 years is not easy.
So after a year and a half he was sacked from Arsenal and Gunners fans had such an aversion to him that he seemed almost an amateur coach. But that is far from the truth.
He won the Europa League three times in a row with Sevilla in 2014, 2015 and 2016. After that, he also managed PSG and after being sacked by Arsenal, he took over at Villarreal. He led the Yellow Submarine to the Europa League title, where they knocked out both Arsenal and Manchester United. With his fourth triumph, he became the most successful coach in this competition.
A year later, he reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, leaving Juventus and Bayern Munich behind. Emery, in short, is a highly respected coach in Spain, but one who doesn’t get much respect in England. So in November 2022, he decided to earn it.
For he took the vacancy at Aston Villa left by the sacked Steven Gerrard. The Villains struggled in the early part of the season, picking up just nine points from 11 games, winning twice, drawing three times and losing six times.
Emery took over at Aston Villa in early November and returned to England in style. In their first game they beat Manchester United 3-1, and before the World Cup break they beat Brighton 2-1.
After the World Cup, he started with a defeat to Liverpool, but then made up for it at Tottenham, where he won 2-0. After that came a draw with Wolves and now Aston Villa have two wins. First, it beat Leeds 2: 1, and on Saturday it beat Southampton 1: 0.
So Aston Villa have won 16 points in seven games, no Premier League team has won more since Emery took over. Only Arsenal and Manchester United have the same number of points.
The Villains have a record of 5 wins, 1 draw and 1 defeat. Thanks to Emery’s miracle potion, a team drowning in the fight for relegation has moved up to 11th place. They are only a point behind Chelsea and Liverpool after 20 games and are even within reach of the Top 6, with Aston Villa just 3 points behind them.
