With much fanfare, Barcelona brought in Ferran Torres for €65 million last week. But the joy is still premature, the Catalans can’t register the new signing yet. They have no room under the salary cap.

Ferrán Torres should help Barcelona with efficiency in the attacking phase, but also with creativity in the construction of the game. But in order for him to work his magic on the pitch, the club’s management has to work its magic first.

This is a difficult situation. You all know why Lionel Messi had to leave his beloved club in the summer. Barcelona no longer had room under the salary cap, as the Culés cut the ceiling by 285 million euros due to the club’s appalling La Liga performance.

In order to sign up new reinforcements (Memphis Depay, Sergio Agüero, Eric García), captains Gerard Piqué, Sergio Busquéts and Jordi Alba had to take a salary, so now they play for practically nothing. And a similar scenario is set to repeat itself in January.

The new signing from Manchester City cannot be registered at the moment. That’s why Torres did not appear on the roster for Barcelona’s game at Mallorca on Sunday.

“We know where we stand and the problems we have with financial fair play. We are currently evaluating the situation and hope to resolve it as soon as possible,” Mateu Alemany, Barcelona’s director, told Movistar television.

The signing of Torres should also help get rid of Demir. The Austrian youngster arrived on loan from Rapid Vienna in the summer and the €10 million option would be automatically activated if he plays 10 games. Barcelona let him jump into 9 games, then stopped his deployment and will end his loan spell in the winter, although his performances were very decent.

“Demir’s departure would help us, there are other departures in the pipeline that we hope to complete this week,” says Alemany openly.

But according to other behind-the-scenes information, it might not be enough. That’s why the management should have asked Sergi Roberto, another of the Blaugranas’ experienced players, to take a pay cut as well. At this rate, however, there will soon be more players in Barcelona without a salary than with one.
