Also, have you heard from your friends that Manchester United will make money on Cristiano Ronaldo’s transfer by selling jerseys? This myth is spreading quite fast. However, the truth is quite different, as the BBC reports.
Cristiano transferred from Juventus Turin to Manchester United for a sum of around 15 million euros. Thus, many claim that this amount will certainly be paid for by the sale of jerseys.
There are only a few people in the football environment who have not heard something similar in the past. However, this fact is certainly not based on truth.
Why? The club will certainly make good money by buying a famous star and the fans will buy the club’s jerseys like crazy.
But the problem is that the full amount of the jersey doesn’t go to the club. Basically, the club gets almost nothing. But Adidas must be happy.
“The proceeds from the sale of the jerseys are taken by the manufacturer. At least most of it,” Dan Plumley, an assistant professor of sports finance at Sheffield Hallam University, told the BBC.
In 2014, the club signed a £750m deal with Adidas, setting a record. Plumley expects United to take no more than 10% of the jerseys.
Thus, according to him, the club will get around £5 from each jersey. A jersey costs £100. So United will not make any money on Ronaldo by selling jerseys.
But they certainly will on his arrival. And that’s mainly thanks to sponsors who will want to have something to do with the club after the world megastar arrived.
