The European Super League can reportedly begin. Its founder and secretary general, Anas Laghrari, revealed that since the European Court of Justice ruling in December, more than 50 clubs have been approached and 20 of them have reportedly pledged to participate in the new competition.

Following the announcement of the new competition, a huge wave of criticism erupted from the football public and football’s governing bodies. As a result, the competition ended practically before it started. However, it is now back in a new coat and more determined than ever.

When the top twelve football clubs in Europe announced the creation of a new competition in 2021, it provoked considerable criticism in football circles. This came from fans, players, smaller teams, national leagues and football’s governing bodies.

Although UEFA and FIFA have virtually blocked the creation of the new competition under the threat of sanctions. The founders of the ambitious project have certainly not laid down their arms. The court action paid off and the controversial competition was given the green light after the European Court of Justice’s decision.

The project’s organisers were not idle and got to work almost immediately. Not only did they come up with a new format for the whole competition. But they also started to reach out to new participants again. And according to the head of the project, they were successful in this respect.

The Super League is reportedly ready to begin, with twenty clubs already pledging to participate

The founder and secretary general of A22 management, the company behind the financing of the new competition, Anas Laghrari, has confirmed that the Superliga can start.

We have spoken to around 50 different clubs since December, 21st (the European Court of Justice ruling),” Laghrari told French daily Quest France. “About 20 of them are very, very motivated by the project. We already have enough clubs to start the competition.”

“I don’t want to say their names because I don’t want to reveal them,” he said. “At the moment we are very busy talking to different clubs, fan associations, players and people who are involved in football on a daily basis.”

“They are all calling us to better understand this project. We can work together to improve football. Once everyone understands that it is much fairer to have an authentic European pyramid and not a system in which a quarter of the Spanish league is worth more than the Belgian champions, people will come around to this model,” he explained the system of the new form of competition.

The amount of the ad-free subscription was also disclosed, which is expected to be around 10 euros. “All matches will be free and it will be like this forever. Gmail is free. WhatsApp is free. Instagram is free. And yet they generate a lot of money per user,” he added an interesting piece of information for fans.

The competition presented in a new coat

The Super League is said to have 64 participants and three levels. The highest level, called the Star League, would have 16 participants each. As would the second level, called the Gold League. The last level, the Blue League, will have 32 teams.

Participation in each level will be on the basis of sporting merit, with no permanent members. Participation in the Blue League will then be based on results in domestic leagues. At the end of the season, a knockout phase will determine the champions of each league and the advancing clubs.

In the first year, clubs will be selected for each league based on transparent performance criteria. Matches should then not interfere with the domestic league calendar and strict financial sustainability rules will be introduced to ensure a level playing field for participating clubs.
