Luis Enrique surprisingly included 17-year-old Gavi, who has played only 5 league games for Barcelona, in his nomination for the Spanish national team. But the incomprehensible move was explained by the young midfielder himself, who gave a great performance against Italy.
When the nomination of the Spanish national team came out before the current reunion, it caused quite a stir in Spain.
According to many media and pundits, this is the weakest La Furia Roja team in several years, and coach Enrique was suspected of (un)nominating some players out of personal likes or dislikes.
He is still under fire from a lot of criticism, but one move has worked quite well. And that was with 17-year-old Gavi, whose nomination sparked a big response. No one doubted that in time he would certainly have the quality for the A-team national team, but after only seven games in adult football, the senior national team nomination was somewhat controversial.
But Gavi has helped Enrique silence the critics, at least for now. Against Italy in the semi-final of the Nations League, he jumped straight into the starting line-up and helped the Spaniards to a 2-0 win. Moreover, at 17 years and 62 days, he became the youngest player in Spanish history.
The match was a bit marred by Bonucci’s red card, but the win over the European champions was still a valuable scalp. Especially as the Spaniards stopped Italy’s unbeaten streak, which stretched back to 2018 and numbered 37 matches.
Gavi has been a motor mouse in the midfield. He started attacks, stopped the opponent’s counter-attacks, moreover, he almost didn’t mess up a pass for the whole match. And he was up against a strong midfield of Verratti, Jorginho, Barella that dominated the summer Euros.
