Slovácko’s rivals are being dealt with by UEFA for invoking Putin. Fenerbahce faces punishment
The atmosphere at the Fenerbahce stadium is legendary and will certainly be unpleasant for Slovácko, the Turkish team’s opponent in the third round of the Europa League. But it may not be so hot, as Fenerbahce are facing a penalty.
The atmosphere at the Fenerbahce stadium is legendary and will certainly be unpleasant for Slovácko, the Turkish team’s opponent in the third round of the Europa League. But it may not be so hot, as Fenerbahce are facing a penalty.
Fenerbahce will face Dynamo Kiev in the second round of the Champions League. While in recent months you could often see support for Ukrainian teams and players, Turkish fans have taken a completely different approach.
In fact, midfielder Ismail Yüksek was sent off in the second half, and moments later Vitaliy Bujalskiy scored the first goal of the match to put Dynamo ahead. And the Fenerbahce fans couldn’t stand it
Some of the Turkish club’s supporters began to call the name of Russian President Vladimir Putin, who has been waging a bloody war in Ukraine for five months. The vast majority of Dynamo players on the pitch have lost someone in this war, be it family, relatives, friends or home, so to hear from the stands the celebration of who is responsible was certainly not pleasant.
The Kiev side, however, were all the more healthily upset and eventually knocked Fenerbahce out in extra time after a goal in the 114th minute.
Fenerbahce thus drops into the Europa League, where they will face Slovácko in the third preliminary round. And quite possibly they will enter the home game played on August 4 punished somehow, as the whole matter is already being handled by UEFA. The club has distanced itself from the unacceptable behaviour of its supporters.
And what can be expected as punishment? Apart from a financial penalty, the closure, or at least partial closure, of the stadium, the part where the chants originated. Slovácko would not be under such pressure in an away game.
