Sons of successful footballers don’t always make it to the highest level. But it is a little different in the case of Diego Simeone, a former great player and now one of the best coaches in the world. He has three sons in professional football, with Giovanni shining the brightest.

Simeone has five children, after three sons he is now raising two five-year-old daughters. And for the football “nutter”, it was never a question of which direction his sons would take. Football was pumped into their veins from a young age.

“When I told my daughters they were my life, Francesca told me that wasn’t true. That my life is football. And I can’t say anything to her because she’s right,” he says in his documentary “Simeone:: Vivir Partido a Partido” Atlético Madrid coach Diego Simeone.

And in his native Argentina, his three sons have picked up their father’s craft. The eldest, Giovanni (26), plays in Italy for Verona, while the middle one, Gianluca (23), is currently playing in the fourth Spanish league after a stint at River Plate or second-tier Ibiza. The youngest, Giuliano (19), plays for Atlético Madrid’s B-team and is already on the bench with the A-team, coached by his father.

Giovanni shines the brightest. He hasn’t sweated in stature, while Diego was a bulldog in midfield, his eldest son is a striker with a nose for goals. He started out in Argentina, playing three seasons for River Plate, two for Banfield.

He first came to Europe in the 2016/17 season and got off to a great start. He netted 12 goals for FC Genoa in Serie A, adding two in the cup, earning him a move to Fiorentina after just a year. There he also had a great season, netting 14 goals and adding 4 assists. However, the next season was not so successful, he scored 6 goals and went on loan to Cagliari.

In his first season he was on the rise again, he had a 12+3 record and Cagliari bought him back. But last season the same scenario came, he scored 6 times and left in the summer, this time to Verona.

The engagement in Northern Italy suited him and he is having his best season. He has already scored 15 goals in 27 games, added 2 assists and fits into the top ten scorers in the top 5 leagues. In Serie A, he is the third top scorer in the league along with AS Roma’s Abraham.

He gets on well with Antonin Barak, who has 10 goals and 3 assists. After just one year at Verona, it is expected that another move will come, this time finally to a higher step. Maybe even to his father at Atlético?
