Shouldn’t Chelsea be looking for a new goalkeeper? Check out Mendy’s other crazy blunder
A very black Sunday for Chelsea fans. The Blues were beaten 0:3 by Leeds and it was all started by a crazy blunder by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, whose mistake was definitely not the first. Isn’t it time to look for a new goalkeeper?
A very black Sunday for Chelsea fans. The Blues were beaten 0:3 by Leeds and everything was started by a crazy mistake by goalkeeper Edouard Mendy, whose first mistake was definitely not the first. Isn’t it time to look for a new goalkeeper?
Since the end of Petr Cech, Chelsea have had to constantly address the goalkeeping issue. The Czech icon was ousted by Thibaut Courtois, with whom the fans were not happy and the Belgian, moreover, did not want to extend his contract and left for Real Madrid.
He was replaced by Kepa Arrizabalaga for 80 million euros, an absolute record for a goalkeeper. The Spanish youngster had an excellent first season, but then his performances dropped tremendously, there was a row with coach Sarri, schoolboy mistakes started piling up and Kepa lost his job.
In fact, Chelsea bought Edouard Mendy, which also looked like a great choice at first. The Blues defence consolidated, the Senegalese kept several clean sheets in a row, made some incredible saves and led Chelsea to a Champions League win.
But by the spring, signs began to emerge that Mendy’s midfield was not quite world class. Perhaps the most visible mistake was in the Champions League quarter-final, when he greased Benzema, which ultimately cost Chelsea promotion.
And in the build-up, Mendy made a few more mistakes until fans began to wonder if Mendy should continue to be number one. And if anyone continued to have faith in the 30-year-old goalkeeper, he must be pissed off too after the blunder at Leeds.
Mendy hacked down Aaronson in the 33rd minute, only for him to freeze incomprehensibly afterwards, the Leeds striker punching the ball out and clearing it into an empty net.
He started a big fiasco for Chelsea, who then scored twice more and lost to Leeds 0:3.
