Should Ronaldo have been sent off against the Czech Republic? Another player would have been red carded, the football world is angry
For most footballers, meeting Cristiano Ronaldo is one of the greatest experiences of their lives and they long to win his jersey, but Václav Jemelka got a big cut on his ankle from Thursday’s Nations League match. And the world doesn’t understand how the Portuguese star got away without a red card.
Some players are complaining about a “wasted” national team meeting after a long season, but that is certainly not the case with Ronaldo. He would prefer to play every game, even though he celebrated his 37th birthday in February and has had a torrid year at Manchester United.
In the opening game of the Nations League against Spain, the holder of five Ballons d’Or came up empty, but against Switzerland he made up for it with two goals to help them win 4-0. He was also in the starting line-up for the match against the Czech Republic.
However, he didn’t show much of his ability. His best moment came in the first half, an effective cross was applauded by the whole stadium. After the change of sides, Ronaldo drew attention to himself, but in a negative light.
In the 50th minute Jakub Brabec played a cross to Václav Jemelka and Ronaldo badly ran over the Olomouc stopper’s ankle. There was a shout from Jemelka, a yellow card for the home star and then a replay that didn’t look pretty.
The side camera footage clearly shows that Ronaldo didn’t hit the ball at all, instead he hit Jemelka’s ankle cleanly. It was very fortunate for the Czech stopper that he was at least a little prepared for the tackle and jumped up, otherwise he probably wouldn’t have finished the game.
The most shocking thing about the brutal tackle is that it was not reviewed by VAR at all. According to fans around the world, Ronaldo escaped a red card just for the sake of the name, after all it wouldn’t be the first time. Either way, the main thing is that Jemelka is fine and the coaching staff doesn’t have to deal with another absence.
