Makar scored a hat trick!
Yes, you heard that right, Avalanche defensive lineman and very productive defenseman Cale Makar scored a hat trick in this game! He also added an assist.
Makar moved into second place in defenseman productivity with 69 points behind the leader Quinn Hughes, who has 4 more points. On the other hand, Makar is clearly the top scorer among defensemen with 17 goals.
Makar did something that rarely happens, he scored his first hat trick in his 297th regular season game. He is only the fourth defenseman in Nordiques/Avalanche history to do so.
The very first backstop in history to record a hat trick was Bryan Fogarty on December 1, 1990, followed by 1996 Stanley Cup championship-winning goal scorer Uwe Krupp and Latvian Sandis Ozolinsh. So it was almost a quarter of a century before another hat trick from the defensive ranks.
MacKinnon has solidified his position as the scoring leader
Also scoring four points in this duel was Canadian scoring leader Nathan MacKinnon. He scored one goal and had 3 assists.
In the Canadian scoring, he has already 4 points ahead of Nikita Kucherov. He is currently on 109 points for 40 goals and 69 assists. And is just two points away from equaling his high from last year.
The Avalanche’s whirlwind was not sustained by Red Wings goalie Alex Lyon, who after 40 minutes and 5 goals gave the spot to James Reimer. The third of the bunch, who scored 4 points in the game, is Finnish goal scorer Mikko Rantanen.
He registered four assists in the game against the Red Wings, which catapulted him into 8th place in Canadian scoring with 83 points, ahead of the league’s top scorer Auston Matthews. Colorado just confirms that they will be unstoppable on home ice in the playoffs.
