Sergio Ramos and Ansu Fati missing from the Spanish national team? We have better players, says Luis Enrique
The Spanish national football team is no longer as feared as it was ten years ago, when it won its third consecutive championship. It still has some quality players, but Luis Enrique is constantly under fire for his nominations.
The Spanish national football team is no longer as feared as it was ten years ago, when it won its third consecutive championship. It still has some quality players, but Luis Enrique is constantly under fire for his nominations.
This time, he did not include two prominent names. Sergio Ramos and Ansu Fati. The Spanish national team captain was already the subject of hype last year when Enrique decided not to nominate him for the EURO.
Sergio Ramos
He mostly missed his first year at PSG, but he recovered towards the end and has been starting regularly since the new season and is getting back to the top level. It was widely expected in Spain that the record-breaker in starts would return to the nomination ahead of the upcoming World Cup, especially as Enrique is not exactly brimming with quality choices at stopper.
However, Ramos was left out again and the experienced stopper will not play the Nations League against Switzerland and Portugal.
“It’s great to see that Sergio Ramos is back after a year. Now he is playing again and regularly. I can say what you want to hear here, but I think the best stoppers we have are here for the reunion,” Enrique said.
By that he means Barcelona’s Eric García, Leeds’ Diego Llorente, Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Valencia’s Juan Guillamón. These are the players the Spanish national team coach considers better than Sergio Ramos.
Ansu Fati
Ansu Fati has only played one game in the starting lineup so far this season, but he has already managed to score two goals and two assists. He is considered a super talent in Spain, but his career has been hampered by injuries.
“We saw him in June and he’s really getting better. But he’s only played one game for the club and that tells me something. I hope to see the best version of Ansu again, but I don’t see him in the squad today,” Enrique explained Fati’s absence.
Iago Aspas
Iago Aspas is the third player who deserves to be nominated to the Spanish national team. The Celta Vigo midfielder scored 18 goals and added six assists last season, and has already scored five times and assisted one goal in six games this season.
But the nominations keep passing him by, much to the public’s displeasure. Last year, for example, he didn’t go to the EURO, although he definitely deserved it after a great season. Enrique, however, continues to overlook him, incomprehensibly.
“Is it for football reasons? I want to believe it is. I never had any problem with Luis Enrique,” Aspas explained to El Larguero.
“It hurts me that I’m not in the national team. But I’m stubborn and I won’t lay down my arms until the end. I finished last season well, it bothers me that he won’t call me. But faith is the last thing to be lost. If he nominates me for Qatar, I’ll be ready, ” says the great goal scorer with determination.
