The women’s tournament has already offered some shocking results and Markéta Vondroušová was another one. The Czech unexpectedly defeated Naomi Osaka 6: 1, 6: 4 and advanced to the quarterfinals. She will play for the semifinals against one of the pair Badosaová – Podoroská.
Vondroušová entered the eight-final battle better. She adapted better to the difficult conditions, returned well, successfully changed her rhythm and games, and hardly made any mistakes.
On the other hand, the favourite committed a lot of unnecessary mistakes and did not start ideally. Vondroušová took a quick lead and took advantage of her opponent’s weak start. She dominated the first set 6:1 and put the Japanese under tremendous pressure.
Osaka improved in the second set. She refined her game and started to dominate more. She took Vondroušová’s serve from the start. But the Czech responded well and managed to take back the lost serve.
After that, the Japanese had several break points, but Vondroušová showed mental resilience and did not let her opponent break.
The decisive moment of the match came at 6::1 5::4 for the Czech. The native of Sokolov again played great on the return and won several match points. She was able to take advantage of the third one and scored the most valuable scalp of her career. She defeated Osaka 6::1, 6::4 and sensationally advanced to the quarterfinals.
Vondrousova gave one of the best performances of her career and deservedly moves on. She will have a solid chance in her next match. She will play the winner of Badosa-Podoroska in the semifinals.
