Chelsea fans celebrated their goalkeeper Édouard Mendy in a big way at the weekend with a monster performance against Brentford. But Paul Scholes, the Manchester United legend, has a slightly different view.

Chelsea managed to beat the tenacious newcomers 1-0, but mainly thanks to Mendy in goal. The Senegalese goalkeeper gave a performance of a lifetime, Brentford players took a total of seventeen shots, seven of which went on target. Chelsea, on the other hand, only needed one shot on target to win the game.

If someone other than Mendy had stood between the three posts, the Blues may well have come away with a defeat. The 29-year-old goalkeeper had to dispose of several attempts by the home side, with Brentford fans already raising their hands in celebration on numerous occasions. You can watch a montage of the best saves here.

But Paul Scholes, the former great Manchester United midfielder and now TV expert, had a slightly different perspective on the whole situation.

“When the goalkeeper is man of the match, does that mean your defence defended badly?” asked Scholes.

the 46-year-old Red Devils icon is definitely right in saying that Chelsea’s defence did not perform well at all against Brentford. The league newcomer shouldn’t have been given so many chances, especially the last chance when Jansson had plenty of space to scissor his attempt was a blatant foul. And that was the 93rd minute.

On the other hand, it must also be said that Chelsea’s defensive effort lacked two important pillars. Coach Tuchel could not count on Thiago Silva or Antonio Rüdiger. Sarr – Christensen – Chalobah were the starting midfield trio. Next time, however, relying on Mendy might not pay off.
