Bayer Leverkusen handled the 16th round of the Bundesliga on Wednesday evening, beating Bochum 4:0 at home. Czech striker Patrik Schick finally got the confidence of the starting line-up, scoring a hat-trick. What did he say after the game against Bochum?
Czech striker Patrick Schick has had a very difficult time getting back into shape after an injury. So far, he has only ever received a few minutes from the Spanish coach. But his performances have steadily improved.
Victor Boniface has been the number 1 in the attack so far and he has been able to score quite regularly in December. Against Bochum, however, coach Xabi Alonso preferred Schick in terms of the formation of the starting line-up. He had only scored three times before the match against Bochum, mainly due to injuries in the current competition year.
At the end of November, he scored his first goal against Häcken in the Europa League group stage, then he scored at home against Paderborn in the domestic cup and finally he was among the scorers in the duel with Molde. Again, of course, in the Europa League.
Against Bochum, he finally started from the first minute and it can be said that he drew all the attention to himself. Schick scored for the first time in the 30th minute, when he opened the scoring in this match with an accurate penalty.
He then scored twice more before half-time. The Czech striker scored his second goal two minutes later, when he headed Jeremie Frimpong’s fierce pass into the net. Schick completed his hat-trick in stoppage time, this time with Alejandro Grimaldo as assistant.
I couldn’t have done better, I’m very happy, says Schick
It was Schick who decided the fate of this match. The fourth and final goal was added in the 69th minute by the twenty-two-year-old Nigerian Boniface, who in turn closed the scoring account.
“I couldn’t have imagined it better. I am very, very happy. But I also have incredible quality behind me in Floo, Jonas and everyone else, so it’s quite easy for me as a striker,” Schick said in an interview after the Bochum match.
Bayer Leverkusen will therefore surely overwinter at the top of the Bundesliga table after a clear 4-0 win with 42 points. However, second-placed Bayern, who have one game less, are four points behind the leader of the German top flight.
