Chile was getting ready for another football feast. The biggest local team, Colo-Colo, was preparing for a derby with Universidad Católica. However, during a training session open to the public, there was a major embarrassment. A section of the stadium collapsed with the fans.
Unpleasant and frightening images are coming out of Chile and onto the European continent. The famous Colo-Colo club, which football fans may know from the FIFA game series among others, was preparing for a big derby in front of its fans.
Several thousand of them arrived at the famous Estadio Monumental David Arellano. There was a great atmosphere at the training session. Preparations for the derby against Universidad Católica were in full swing. However, an unpleasant moment occurred afterwards.
One part of the stadium could not withstand the onslaught of fans and collapsed. Fortunately, it was not the stands, but only the roof structure, where dozens of supporters of Chile’s biggest club were.
Emergency crews immediately headed to the stadium and the fire brigade arrived. Training was immediately suspended. And there was fear on the ground. Exactly 33 years ago, the stadium was reopened after a collapse of the advertising section of the stadium left some fans hanging on to the structures of the Chilean shrine.
Fortunately, the situation did not end in tragedy. At least 10 people were injured and 8 supporters suffered various fractures, but no one lost their lives, which is the most important thing in the end.
The match was postponed until the next day.
