Naples took another important step on Sunday night. They didn’t let the Champions League elimination get them down and they are heading successfully for the title in Serie A. The chances of not winning it are absolutely minimal. And the fans celebrated after the return of their favourites from Turin.
The Partenopei may have failed to win their last three games and dropped out of the Champions League, but they are all the more determined to concentrate on not losing the domestic title at any cost. However, nothing easy awaited them.
Napoli played on Sunday night at Juventus, who are back in a position to guarantee the Champions League after the 15-point deduction was cancelled. But they will still have to fight for the top four with the Milan giants and AS Roma. Second-placed Lazio, however, have nothing certain either.
It is Luciano Spalletti’s charges who are basking in the limelight. Lazio fell to Torino and Napoli could increase their lead again if they win at Juventus. And that’s exactly what happened. Giacomo Raspadori scored the winning goal to make it 1-0.
With seven rounds to go, Napoli has 78 points, while Lazio has only 61. The Partenopei are one step away from achieving their big dream. They can win their first title since the legendary Diego Maradona. The last time a team from under Vesuvius won the league was in 1990.
And because it’s a big occasion and Naples is alive with football, the players received a spectacular welcome on their return from Turin. Of course, their bus was chased by fans on their traditional scooters.
And it wasn’t just the traditional means of transport. On arrival in the city, a large gathering of supporters awaited the bus, singing, waving flags and lighting smoke bombs. The atmosphere was simply taken care of.
What’s more, the players had a great time. Especially the two main stars, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, the best passer in the Italian league, and Victor Osimhen, the top scorer in Serie A for a change.
These shots alone make it hard not to wish Naples the title. If it does, the city will be in for a huge celebration. It will be only the third time in the club’s history that the Partenopei players will lift the Italian championship trophy above their heads.
