Salzburg is looking for a shock promotion. Can they knock out Bayern Munich?
The result of the first match shocked everyone. Salzburg had a long lead over Bayern Munich, until Coman secured at least a draw for the Bavarians in the 90th minute. But the Austrian side showed that they don’t want to end up in the Champions League eight-finals.
The result of the first match shocked everyone. Salzburg had a long lead over Bayern Munich, until Coman secured at least a draw for the Bavarians in the 90th minute. But the Austrian side showed that they don’t want to end up in the Champions League eight-finals.
It was probably the most surprising result of the first matches of the eighth round. And it could have been even more surprising if Coman hadn’t equalised in the last minute. Salzburg put in a sympathetic performance, the packed Red Bull Arena was delighted.
“A decisive day ahead. Anything can happen in a rematch in Munich,” Salzburg wrote on their social media this morning. And they are right. The game is open, especially if the visitors put in a similar performance as they did at home.
Moreover, Bayern are not in the best shape. It has won only twice in its last five games, against Fürth and Frankfurt, drew with Leverkusen and Salzburg at the weekend and lost to Bochum.
“It will be a really tough game and it’s clear who the favourites are. But we will go into the game with a lot of confidence. We want to reward ourselves for a great season so far,” said Salzburg coach Matthias Jaissle at a press conference.
Bayern are still the clear favourites, but they have to be very careful with Salzburg. Thomas Müller knows this very well.
“In the first game we saw what Salzburg is capable of, especially with the support of their fans. The game didn’t go according to our plans, but we are confident going into the rematch. We know what to expect and we won’t underestimate Salzburg,” assures the Bayern striker.
