It was quite a shock when Bayern Munich sacked Julian Nagelsmann last week. It was even bigger when the club’s management high-fived the new coach just a few hours later.
That was Thomas Tuchel, who was reportedly one of the main reasons Nagelsmann was fired so early. Tuchel had been linked with Real Madrid and Bayern didn’t want to risk losing their favourite.
In fact, Tuchel had been in the running for a long time and was at the top of all the candidates. So they decided to give him a king’s salary.
The former Chelsea coach will receive €12 million per year at Bayern, reports Sky Sport. He has signed a 2 and a half year contract in Munich.
Julian Nagelsmann was receiving 8 million euros per year at Munich. But his contract is valid until 2026, so Bayern still owe him a hefty sum. And he will have to pay it either until the end of his contract or until Nagelsmann finds a new club.
So Bayern learned their lesson and had only one condition for Tuchel – he must accept a short-term contract. Because nobody lasts long at the Allianz Arena these days.
Since Pep Guardiola’s departure, Bayern have already replaced seven coaches and none has stayed longer than two years. Carlo Ancelotti, Willy Sagnol, Jupp Heynckes, Niko Kovac, Hansi Flick and Julian Nagelsmann. Now it’s the turn of the seventh, Tuchel, with another million-dollar salary.
