Sad news for the great fans of Real Valladolid. Their beloved club is once again relegated to La Liga 2 after a year. The club’s famous owner Ronaldo Nazário has done nothing about it.
Last season, Brazilian Ronaldo gave his players great motivation. He promised them that if they were promoted to the first league, he would cycle the sacred Santiago de la Compostela, a route of 3,000 kilometres.
“Il Fenomeno” fulfilled his promise and after the promotion he actually got on his bike and rode the route. Next year, however, he will probably have to do something similar.
Real Valladolid, after returning to the top flight, immediately fell back to the second league. With everything in his hands, the relegation will hurt all the more.
With three rounds to go, the Pucella beat Barcelona and got a big boost in the fight for salvation. In the last two rounds they came up against the 17th. Almeria and 15th Getafe, and a single win would probably be enough to save them.
There was a 0:0 draw with Almeria and six more teams could have been relegated before the last round. Valladolid had 39 points, Celta Vigo and Almería 40, Valencia, Getafe and Cadiz 41.
Real Valladolid, who welcomed Getafe at home, had everything in their hands. All they had to do was beat Getafe and they could have celebrated salvation.
But it didn’t happen, the team from the centre of Spain failed to score again and after another goalless draw, they are relegated. In theory, a draw could have been enough, but Celta Vigo beat Barcelona and Almería drew with Espanyol.
Espanyol and Elche are the other two relegated teams who knew their fate before the last round. Of last year’s newcomers, only Valladolid were relegated, Almeria celebrated their rescue and Girona even fought for the cups until the last round.
