Many fans of Cristiano Ronaldo and football in general have breathed a deep sigh of relief. Portugal, and with it its biggest star, will not be absent from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. It will be Ronaldo’s fifth and final tournament.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been playing at the highest level since a very young age. At the age of 18, he was already a pivotal figure for Portugal at their home Euros, where Figo and co. reached the final.
Two years later at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, his role was elevated even further, and by 2008 he was the star of the tournament. He hasn’t missed a major tournament since.
In total, he has appeared five times at the European Championships and four times at the World Championships. And a fifth record-breaking appearance is in sight. Only four players have ever made it to five World Championships.
Antonio Carbajal – Mexico – 1950 – 1954 – 1958 – 1962 – 1966
Lothar Mathaus – Germany – 1982 – 1986 – 1990 – 1994 – 1998
Rafael Márquez – Mexico – 2002 – 2006 – 2010 – 2014 – 2018
Gianluigi Buffon – Italy – 1998 – 2002 – 2006 – 2010 – 2014
Four players now have the opportunity to touch the record five participations. In addition to Ronaldo, they include Lionel Messi of Argentina and Guillermo Ochoa and Andrés Guardado of Mexico.
In addition, our neighbours won the barrage between Poland and Sweden, so we will also see Robert Lewandowski at the championship. Thus, apart from the Italians, we will see all the main stars from Europe at the tournament.
