Cristiano Ronaldo is heading for another record. If he plays in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein, he will become the footballer with the most international games played in history.

When Ronaldo came on in the quarter-final match against Morocco at the World Cup in Qatar, he equalled Kuwaiti striker Bader Al-Mutawa’s record for the most starts in an international jersey.

The Madeira native has now played 196 games for the Portuguese national team. If he plays in the Euro 2024 qualifier against Liechtenstein, he will become the player with the most international games played in history.

Although the 38-year-old playing legend is currently playing outside Europe at club level, specifically in Saudi Arabia’s top competition, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez has called him up to the national team.

It must be noted, Ronaldo has been very successful in the Al-Nassr jersey so far, scoring nine goals and two assists in eight games.

Records are my motivation

“Records are my motivation. I want to become the most capped player in history. I would be proud of that. But it doesn’t stop there. I still want to be called up to the national team often,” Ronaldo said at a press conference before the match against Liechtenstein.

It should be noted, Ronaldo also admitted that he considered ending his national team career after the World Cup.

But in the end, he looked at the whole situation from different perspectives and said he learned a lot. Based on his words, he still has a lot to give to Portugal.

Ronaldo has scored 118 goals in 196 games for the Portuguese national team so far. He won gold at the 2016 European Championships and dominated the 2019 Nations League with Portugal.
