Marco Reus is very likely to leave Borussia Dortmund and return to Mönchengladbach. At least these are the reports that have been brought by the German media in the last few hours.

Marco Reus is a product of Borussia Dortmund’s youth academy, but he started his professional first team career in the A-team at another Borussia, the one from Mönchengladbach.

The now thirty-four-year-old offensive midfielder spent three years at the club before moving to Signal Iduna Park in July 2012.

Reus played the best years of his active football career in a Dortmund jersey. In terms of individual statistics, the German international has played a total of 410 competitive games for Borussia. He scored 167 goals and assisted 124 more.

In 2012 and 2019, he was named German Footballer of the Year, and was named the Bundesliga’s best player three times. Specifically, in the 2011/12, 2013/14 and 2018/19 seasons. In terms of team achievements, however, Reus did not have such a successful career.

Although he dominated the domestic cup twice with Dortmund, he failed to win a Bundesliga title in his 12-year career in a Borussia jersey. Perhaps the closest he came to it was last season, but his team only drew with Mainz in the last round and handed the title to Bayern. In the 2012/13 season they reached the Champions League final.

Reus to Mönchengladbach?

However, Reus’s contract at Dortmund expires at the end of June this year and, as reported by Bulinews or Sport Bild, the German star is unlikely to sign a new one.

If this transfer does take place, Mönchengladbach will pay nothing due to the expiring contract. However, the problem could be the Dortmund native’s salary.

The Signal Iduna Park-based outfit have already cut down to an annual €6 million salary in their recent contract extension. With a possible commitment to Mönchengladbach, he would probably have to go down in salary again. On the other hand, he would still be able to play in the German top flight. In any case, the decision is up to him.
