Chelsea beat Tottenham in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night and took a big step towards the final, in which the better of Liverpool – Arsenal will await them. However, Antonio Conte’s charges are otherwise doing well in the Premier League and no big signings are in the pipeline.

Conte has already coached Spurs on the bench for 12 games, during which he has notched up only two cup defeats. The first was a disgraceful one against NS Mura in the Conference League and the second was against Chelsea on Wednesday.

However, the London rivals were better from the start of the game and did not allow their opponents to have a shot on target in the first half. The Blues were not so dominant in the second half, but they controlled the game and go into the rematch with a very good 2-0 record.

For the Italian coach, Wednesday’s game showed a lot of flaws that he needs to work on with his players to be able to compete with the best. In the Premier League, Tottenham has not lost since Conte arrived (5 wins and 3 draws), and has already had a duel with Liverpool, which ended 2: 2.

“It was a difficult game right from the start, when Chelsea showed that they are much better than us. But it’s not easy to play at Stamford Bridge, even more so when you get a goal right at the start,” Conte told Sky Sports after the game.

All Spurs fans are now excited to see what first signing the Italian coach will bring in, but Wednesday’s post-match interview didn’t make them too happy.

“I don’t think buying new players will solve our problems. It will only be solved if we work hard and improve all aspects of our team. If you think we will buy one or two players and that will solve everything, you are wrong,” Conte is clear.

Transfer speculation

Tottenham have a great team, there is no doubt about that and the experienced Italian strategist is well aware of that. However, there are certain positions that would be convenient to fill, given his demanding style.

The most likely post that Conte will want to strengthen is the centre of defence, both defensively and offensively. According to several English sites, Tottenham are interested in Franck Kessié, whose strength and versatility could strengthen the midfield immensely. It is he who could become the engine of the team.

As far as the offensive side is concerned, three players in particular are mentioned. Cont’s beloved Nicolò Barella, Philippe Coutinho, for whom the Premier League suited him, and Isco, who is still playing second fiddle at Real Madrid.

This year we can also expect the arrival of a flanker, the name most often mentioned is that of Tariq Lamptey, currently at Brighton, where he is perfectly suited to his role in a very physically demanding style of play.

Likewise, Tottenham will be looking to strengthen their offensive line, with talk of bringing in striker Dusan Vlahovic from Fiorentina, who is in huge demand across Europe, or wingers Adam Traore and Dejan Kulusevski.
