Records were broken at Anfield! Liverpool record historic result with Manchester United in almost 130 years of history of mutual duels
Liverpool beat Manchester United 7-0 in the 26th round of the Premier League, breaking the record for the first time in their nearly 130-year history. The historic victory was led by Mohamed Salah, who became the club’s all-time top scorer in England’s top competition.
Football has no logic, which is why fans around the world love it so much
Football simply has no logic. The 26th round of the Premier League only confirmed that thesis. Manchester United completely collapsed in the second half at Liverpool and took home a historic debacle.
The almost 130-year history of the so-called Northwest derby is being rewritten in bold letters. Liverpool are not going through a successful season this season and have faltered on eight occasions out of the thirteen games played in 2023. In particular, a 2-5 home loss to Real Madrid in the millionaire Champions League has swayed the club’s fans.
Manchester United is rather the opposite case. Red Devils fans have struggled in recent years. However, this season is a different song altogether and the players under coach Erik ten Hag have finally found their game face, ending a six-year wait for a trophy last week.
However, all expectations came to naught during today’s league game at Anfield. For Liverpool, who are fighting for the places that guarantee the Champions League, put on a show in front of their fans that they will not soon forget.
Salah led his Liverpool side to a historic milestone in front of their home fans
The game, which was fairly even in the first half, turned into a maddening defensive collapse for the Red Devils after the change of sides. The latter scored six goals in just 45 minutes, which meant the home team won 7:0.
The result led to an adjustment of the historical statistics, as the fans have never seen such a goal difference between the two clubs in their 128-year history. The record, held by Liverpool since October 1895 in a 7-1 home win over Manchester United, was broken on Sunday.
As we reported earlier today, the central figure in today’s historic win was Mohamed Salah, who scored two goals and assisted two others. With his two extra goals, the Egyptian forward broke the record for the most goals scored in Liverpool’s Premier League history.
“It‘s a special night for me,” a delighted Salah gushed after the game. “Now I will go home, celebrate with my family and have chamomile tea, ” he revealed of how he will celebrate the historic achievement.
Jürgen Klopp’s side are now just three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham and have a game in hand. This is a great way to end the season, in which they will fight for the Champions League next season.
