Arsenal are continuing to strengthen their squad for the new season, in which they will play in the Champions League after a long break and will also want to fight for the title. Now comes the strengthening of the goalkeeping post, with the arrival of David Raya from Brentford.

It was looking like Arsenal were finally going to make it. It had been sitting at the top of the table for almost the entire season, only to run out of breath in the spring and finally cede the title to Manchester City.

So in the summer, the Gunners decided to step up big time. Roughly 100 million euros for Declan Rice, another 75 for Kai Havertz. For 40 million euros, Jurrien Timber arrived from Ajax.

So Arteta got reinforcements in attack, midfield and defence. The only thing missing was a goalkeeper and that was done in mid-August. Not that Arsenal were looking for a new number one, Aaron Ramsdale has proven several times that he is more than a quality goalkeeper.

However, number two Matt Turner had left for Nottingham and Arteta was looking for a new replacement goalkeeper who would also push Ramsdale. And he managed to get a really classy number two.

For from Brentford comes Spanish goalkeeper David Raya, who was one of the best goalkeepers in the league last season and even made the Spanish national team.

Raya joins Arsenal on loan with an option. The Gunners will pay £3million for the loan, if they want to buy the Spanish goalkeeper permanently after the season, Brentford will earn another £27million.

It will be interesting to see if Arteta leaves Raya and Ramsdael to battle it out for the number one spot, or if he splits the roles between them and one catches the cups, the other the league. It would be a shame to let such a quality goalkeeper sit on the bench all season.
