Rafael Nadal never ceases to amaze the tennis world. While last summer he didn’t know if he would ever play tennis professionally again, he is now enjoying the best start to a season of his career. For 12 times in a row, his opponents have failed to come through for him.
Rafael Nadal never ceases to amaze the tennis world. While last summer he didn’t know if he would ever play tennis professionally again, he is now enjoying the best start to a season of his career. For 12 times in a row, his opponents have failed to come through for him.
Everyone knows what an incredible fighter Nadal is. But the Spanish tennis player never ceases to amaze. After a leg injury last summer, he withdrew from both Wimbledon and the US Open, not knowing if he would ever return to the courts again. And now he’s back in top form.
Nadal’s last defeat came on August 6, 2021, at a tournament in Washington. Since returning to the courts in January, the Spanish tennis player has only been winning. His first win came on January 6 against Berankis, then he took on Ruusuvuori and then Cressy.
At the Australian Open he successively cleared Giron, Hanfmann, Khachanov, Mannarino, Shapovalov, Berrettini and Medvedev. He is currently at a tournament in Acapulco, Mexico, where he has already knocked out Americans Kudla and Kozlov.
That makes a total of 12 wins in a row, Nadal’s best start to a season in his career. He thus surpassed his feat from 2014, when he succumbed to Stan Wawrinka in the Australian Open final due to a back injury.
Nadal will face the third American in a row, 39th-ranked Tommy Paul, in the quarterfinals in Acapulco. If he makes it through this match and Medvedev knocks out Nishioka, we will see a rematch of the recent Australian Open final in the semifinals.
Nadal has won three times in Acapulco, and is now aiming for a fourth title. Medvedev or Tsitsipas are still in the game, no other top 10 competitors are in Mexico. Zverev was suspended from the tournament for unsportsmanlike conduct, Berrettini withdrew due to injury.
