Czech women in action
Brenda Fruhvirtova didn’t emulate her older sister Linda and didn’t get past Russia’s Kalinska. She certainly didn’t disgrace herself, winning the first set and hitting eight aces. Only the American Parks scored more straight points from her serve yesterday.
Markéta Vondroušová dominated her match. In the second set, she had to turn back from 1:3 against the home team’s Bassols, but the left-handed Czech handled it with ease.
Let’s hope that after a successful qualification and today’s match she is well prepared for the tournament’s 17th seed, Poland’s Linnet.
Other women
Canadian Eugenie Bouchard, yes the one who was beaten by Petra Kvitova in the Wimbledon final nine years ago, has already considered ending her career. She’s still playing. And well. Yesterday, she beat Ukraine’s Jastremska and now she’s up against the world number 20, Italy’s Trevisan.
Russia, too, has its young tennis hope. Fifteen-year-old Mirra Andreeva holds the wild card at the Madrid Open and she made the most of it today. She beat Canadian Leylah Fernandez (49th in the rankings), five years older than her, 6: 3 and 6: 4, and is preparing for Brazil’s Haddad Mai.
Men
Richard Gasquet and Stan Wawrinka proved they are not old hands. The latter had to decide the match in the third set tiebreak, while the Frenchman had the match in his pocket in 62 minutes.
The Slovakian number one Alex Molčanov is the subject of our previous separate article. However, let’s reveal that he succeeded.
Let’s also mention Finn Emil Ruusuvuori, who enjoyed two tiebreak wins against Frenchman Humbert. He made 13 successful attacks on the net out of 13 possible and will be under the watchful eye of all tennis fans in the second round, as he will be facing home star Carlos Alcaraz, the number one favourite to win the Madrid trophy.
