Cristiano Ronaldo is back in the spotlight. He could have decided the game in extra time in the Euro 8 final against Slovenia, but he missed the penalty. This was exploited by the English BBC, which took a dig at the Portuguese star.

It’s not his tournament. Cristiano Ronaldo isn’t playing downright badly, but his shooting just isn’t sticking. He couldn’t make it in the group stage against the Czech Republic, Turkey or Georgia.

Then he didn’t score in the opening 90 minutes of the eighth-final against Slovenia, which went to extra time. Ronaldo had a unique opportunity to score.

In the 105th minute, referee Orsato whistled a penalty after a foul on Jota and the Portuguese had the chance to open the scoring in his refined discipline. But Atlético Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak got onside and cleared the ball onto the bar.

When Ronaldo saw his mother crying in the stands at the change of sides, he too was overcome by tears and had to be consoled by teammates. However, the English television channel BBC decided to make a joke of the whole situation.

When the penalty was replayed, it added the graphic ‘Misstiano Penaldo’. A huge wave of criticism was launched at the English TV on the social network X, with fans considering it very unprofessional and disrespectful to one of the greatest legends in football history. And they are not alone.

“BBC, this is a disgrace!” wrote legendary England defender John Terry on his Instagram.

But Ronaldo showed great mental strength, recovered from the missed penalty, led by example in the shootout and converted Portugal’s first penalty. He was then helped by goalkeeper Diogo Costa, who sensationally saved all three penalties to send the Portuguese into the quarter-finals.
