After two losses against Inter and Barcelona with a score of 1::7, Viktoria Plzeň headed to Germany to challenge Bayern Munich. The Bavarian side are at the other end of the Champions League Group C table. The giant had succeeded in both previous matches and was going to win against Plzen as well.

These two teams last faced each other in the 2013/14 season and also in the Champions League. The first match Bayern crushed Viktoria and won 5: 0 at home, the rematch in Pilsen was not so cruel, Bayern took home a narrow 1: 0 win.

Now the Victorians didn’t go to Germany to score, but they found out right from the start that Bayern wasn’t going to spare them. From the opening whistle, the home side raced forward and celebrated their first goal in the 7th minute. Leroy Sané headed the ball, rounded two players and sent the ball into the net. The beautiful goal started the demolition.

Pilsen certainly didn’t want to get a quick goal, but they didn’t hold back. Jan Kopic shot in the 12th minute, but Manuel Neuer had no problems with his shot. He was able to set up a quick counter-attack which was finished off by Serge Gnabry.

The two-goal lead was not enough for Bayern, who did not let Plzen do anything and kept pushing forward. The result was a goal in the 21st minute to make it 3:0. This time, Sadio Mané showed his solo skills, who also bypassed several opponents and sent the ball into the net.

Bayern’s goal machine stopped for a while, but did not let up in its efforts. There was more joy in the 36th minute, but the joy didn’t last long. VAR called off Musiala’s goal because Sané was offside.

No more goals fell before half-time, yet there was no doubt who was the giant on the pitch. Pilsen produced only one shot in the half, and hardly looked at Bayern’s half.

Even in the second half, the home side didn’t let up. In the 51st minute, Mané sent a centre into the penalty area, which was worked by Sané and sent the ball into the net. It was his second goal of the game.

After an hour of play, Bayern scored another goal. Eric Choupo Moting needed less than 15 minutes to score after running onto the pitch. Goretzka found him free and the striker increased the score to 5:0 with a shot against the bar.

Moments after the fifth goal, Plzen had to make a substitution. The injured Hejda had to leave the pitch and was replaced by Tijani.

Viktoria Plzeň defended for most of the match, but since the fifth goal, they did not let Bayern get any more dangerous action. Viktoria went forward a couple of times, but they didn’t threaten Neuer either.

A sold-out Allianz Arena watched Bayern’s 5-0 victory over Viktoria Plzen. The Bavarian side remains in first place in the table with nine points. Pilsen suffered their third defeat. A look at their score is tragic (1::12).

The Westerners will have something to make up for in a week’s time. On Wednesday 12 October at 9pm they will face Bayern Munich again at their stadium.
