Oblak will probably have his worst season at Atlético! His numbers are still excellent

Jan Oblak celebrated his 29th birthday on Friday. But he would surely have preferred to celebrate it under better circumstances. Atlético Madrid are failing to build on last year’s championship season and, statistically speaking, the Slovenian goalkeeper is having his worst year since arriving in Spain. Nevertheless, his numbers are excellent.

Last season was a great one for Atlético Madrid. At least on the league stage, Diego Simeone’s charges won the title. A lot of credit for that goes to Jan Oblak, who shone in goal. Of course, he was helped by the defensive approach for which the Madrid team is famous.

But now Atlético are not doing so well. After 19 games, they have only 31 points, which is good enough for fourth place. The first Real Madrid has 46 points, the second Sevilla 41. In addition, Simeone’s charges unusually “often” score goals.

In 19 duels, Oblak had to pull the ball out of the net 22 times, a similar number of goals he usually gets in the league for the whole season, not for half of it. The two worst league seasons for a Slovenian goalkeeper? He got 27 goals in them, yet kept 17 and 20 clean sheets respectively.

Currently, Atlético’s number one has 6 zeros, which isn’t bad. Only five goalkeepers in the whole of La Liga are doing better, with Sevilla’s Bono leading the stats with nine zeros.

Of course, it could be that the second half of the season Atlético will be truly sovereign at the back and won’t concede many more goals. However, the cloud will have a lot of work to do in order not to surpass his “worst” season in terms of nets.

So what did the Slovenian’s worst league season look like in terms of clean sheets? He kept only 15 in the league. Of course, we can also count the first season after his arrival, he kept only 7, but he played 11 league games, so it can’t be taken into account.

Overall, Oblak’s numbers at Atlético are truly amazing. He has played 328 competitive games for the Madrid side, conceding just 242 goals and keeping an incredible 167 clean sheets.

Thus, in almost 52% of the matches he played for Madrid, he kept a clean sheet. This is a truly exceptional statistic. And that Atlético’s defensive approach to the game is to blame? Perhaps, however, Oblak also has to make excellent saves in goal.

He is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers, not only of today. Moreover, he is only celebrating his 29th birthday, so Atlético must be wringing their hands for having him in the squad. However, they have to start dealing with a contract extension, as the Slovenian goalkeeper’s current one expires in the summer of 2023.
