Newcastle United have had a fantastic season and will play in the Champions League for the first time in 20 years. However, he doesn’t want to play second fiddle and he’s going to adjust his squad accordingly. He unveiled his first signing on Monday lunchtime. And not just any player.

The new owners brought a lot of hope to Newcastle at first, but it’s already clear that the results are starting to show. The Magpies have had a dream season, with coach Eddie Howe leading them to fourth place in the Premier League.

The team from the north-east of England did not spend recklessly on transfers, rather it was a conceptual move. Occasionally, a large sum has fallen, but breaking transfer records hasn’t happened in terms of the English-only market either.

And it looks like it will be no different this summer. Newcastle may be playing in the Champions League and looking to strengthen the squad, but the very first signing is likely to be the most expensive ever to arrive at St. James’ Park. Although it’s likely to spend more than a year ago.

That first reinforcement is the talented Italian and already former AC Milan player, last season’s Champions League semi-finalists, Sandro Tonali. The club has already officially introduced him. According to Fabrizio Romano, he should cost the Magpies 70 million euros including bonuses. The Italian club will get 10% of the sum from his possible further transfer.

Tonali thus becomes the most expensive Italian in history, as well as being the most expensive sale in AC Milan’s club history, and along with Alexander Isak, he will be Newcastle’s most expensive purchase.

The Italian international played for AC Milan for two seasons, carving out a steady place in the team and was one of the important players in the starting line-up. He recently celebrated his 23rd birthday and will be under contract in England until 2028.

“I want to thank Newcastle. It gives me a huge opportunity for my career. I want to repay the trust on the pitch. I will give my all. I’m excited to be playing at St James’ Park. I can’t wait to feel the passion of the fans,” Tonali expressed to the club’s website.

Coach Howe is not hiding his excitement either, ” Sandro is an exceptional talent. He has the mental, physical and technical ability to fit in with us. At 23 years old he has a lot of experience, he has been a key player in one of the top leagues and in the Champions League, plus he represents his country. He has great potential and can grow and develop with us. It’s going to be an exciting season for us.”
