The NHL offered a duel of the top teams from the Western Conference. Colorado welcomed the Dallas Stars and dominated the game 5:1. Nathan MacKinnon contributed two points to the victory and extended his home point streak to 29 games in a row.
Dallas enjoyed a 68-second lead in the game
Colorado entered the game with their number one goaltender Alexander Georgiyev. The Stars goal was defended by Jake Oettinger. The home team’s goalie capitulated in the first minute when 21-year-old forward Logan Stankoven scored his second NHL goal after a Jason Robertson pass, although he was playing in only his third game.
However, Georgiyev closed the scoring after the goal and didn’t allow a shot for the rest of the game. Dallas was again more active in the shootout and the home goalie contributed 33 saves to the victory. The Stars enjoyed the lead for just 68 seconds.
Oetinger cashed in off the stick of Joel Kiviranta and in the 6th minute of the game, Mikko Rantanen put the game away with his 31st goal and 76th point of the season. That moved him into 9th place in the Canadian scoring race. Nathan MacKinnon had an assist on the goal, extending his incredible home streak of scoring in 29 straight games.
MacKinnon has the second-longest point streak since the 1995-96 season
The Canadian also added a goal in the second period to extend the home team’s lead to 4-1. During this successful point streak, he has already accumulated 61 points on 23 goals and 38 assists. This is the sixth longest home point streak in NHL history.
It is already the longest streak since the 1995/96 season, when Mario Lemieux managed to score in 31 home games in a row. The absolute record is still quite a ways away. The longest home point streak since the start of the season is still held by Wayne Gretzky from the 1988/89 season with a streak of 40 games in a row.
With two more points in this game, MacKinnon has already improved to 98 points on the season and has cut the point gap to leader Kucherov to 5 points, while also having a 7 point gap to third-place Connor McDavid. The assist on Rantanen’s goal was his 538th of the regular season.
He tied Peter Stastny for third in the Nordiques/Avalanche history charts. The Avalanche decided their victory in the second period when Oetinger cashed in on three occasions. Artturi Lehkonen sealed the game at 5-1 for Colorado with a power-play goal in the 35th minute.
Georgiyev picked up his 31st win of the season and is tied with Demko for first place in the NHL.
