Nagelsmann: Football needs to modernize, just like the NFL. He suggests headsets for players and time-outs
Julian Nagelsmann is one of the most progressive and modern coaches in the world. It is not for nothing that at the age of 28 he was already leading Hoffenheim, then Leipzig and now he is sitting on the bench of Bayern Munich. But he would like to modernise football.
Julian Nagelsmann is one of the most progressive and modern coaches in the world. It is not for nothing that at the age of 28 he was already leading Hoffenheim, then Leipzig and now he is sitting on the bench of Bayern Munich. But he would like to modernise football.
Although he is only 34 years old, Nagelsmann already has one of the best coaching jobs in the world. From the new season he leads Bayern Munich, the German giants and rulers of the Bundesliga in recent years.
Already in Leipzig, he was famous for his modern methods, and he had a lot of experts in different fields in his implementation team. But he would like to take football to an even higher level. In his opinion, the world’s most watched sport could be something like American football and, more specifically, the famous NFL.
“Football must stop hiding behind tradition and there must be a revolution,” Nagelsmann believes. How would he like to move football forward?
“American football is much more technologically advanced than football. The quarterback has an earpiece so he can listen to the coach. We definitely need something like that. As a football coach, you could do great things with such a thing,” says the 34-year-old Bayern Munich coach.
Nagelsmann also doesn’t like the fact that he can’t communicate properly with the players because of the excessive noise in stadiums, and he complains that there are no time-outs, which are commonplace in American football.
“We only have half-time to discuss tactics with the players,” Nagelsmann complained. In American football, but also in hockey and basketball, time-outs are allowed for the sake of pure playing time. In football, time is always running, there is no stopping it.
Nagelsmann’s proposed changes would thus have to mean a major football revolution, which probably not all fans are ready for yet. However, it is possible that football will be modernised in some way in the coming years.
