Moyes: We go into the Arsenal game in a great position. We finished ahead of them last year and we want to do it again this year

On Wednesday night, West Ham will travel a few miles to north London to take on Arsenal. The Hammers enter the London derby in a better position, something coach David Moyes is well aware of.

West Ham have been on a roll in the Premier League lately. After losses to Wolverhampton and Manchester City came an unlucky draw with Brighton, after which the Hammers took on league leaders Chelsea. But then West Ham only drew with Burnley, who are only 18th in the table.

Arsenal are on a similar rollercoaster. Wins against Leicester and Watford were bettered by a 0:4 thrashing by Liverpool. The Gunners then made up for it with a 2:0 win over Newcastle, but then came two losses to Manchester United (2:3) and Everton (1:2). Mikel Arteta’s charges, however, came back into it and beat Southampton 3:0.

West Ham is in fourth place and is the closest pursuer of the relegation trio Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea. The Hammers have collected 28 points and are eight points behind third-placed Chelsea. Arsenal are sixth behind Manchester United and have 26 points, leaving them just two points away from fourth-placed West Ham.

With the Red Devils game postponed, we will see a battle for the top four on Wednesday night.

And West Ham coach David Moyes believes that won’t happen either.

“We go into this game with Arsenal in a great position. We finished above Arsenal last season, which was a great achievement for us, and we want to do the same this season,” Moyes confidently told a press conference.

West Ham are the executioner of strong opponents this season, Soucek and co. have already beaten Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester United and Manchester City. What is it?

“I think it’s the mind-set. We wanted to be organised and prepared against teams that are great on the ball and have great players. We encourage the players to be confident against the big teams, but then again other teams come and it’s much harder for us to score against them. We have to overcome that, that’s part of becoming a great team,” Moyes believes.

The duel with Arsenal is scheduled for Wednesday at Emirates Stadium from 21:00. And it’s really about a lot.
