When King arrived on loan from Spartak Moscow in the summer of 2021, Hammers fans were delighted. After the experience of the Czech’s previous two arrivals, they hoped the hirsute midfielder would complete the Czech legion.
However, King didn’t get a chance in a league or cup game for a long time, and when he later got a couple of opportunities, it became clear why. He wasn’t used to the pressure, the ball bounced off him and he didn’t have the speed either. In the end, he played only six games with the hammer on his heart.
“I had a bad relationship with Coach Moyes. I just lacked interaction, communication. I wasn’t getting feedback. I mean advice or comments during training sessions. I tried to at least listen to the advice that the coach was giving to the other central midfielders. I followedthose instructions,” Král told Sport.cz.
While Soucek and Coufal have almost never missed the opening eleven for the Premier League, King has only enjoyed a league start once.
King’s unequivocally best game in the British Isles was September’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Manchester United. King played the full 90 minutes and helped to win 1-0. Despite the praise from the fans, he continued to sit on the bench in the league.
“The coach told me at the end of the season that he was sorry I didn’t get a chance. And that he liked my attitude. From that moment on, I didn’t look for it. All I asked the coach was to give me a recommendation in case a club asked about me. In the context that he liked my approach. He did it,” continued the national midfielder.
On the other hand, in the FA Cup match against Kidderminster or in the 0:1 defeat against Dinamo Zagreb in the Europa League, he was downright disappointing. Some Hammers fans even called him the worst signing of recent years.
After a year’s adventure in the best league in the world, King went to Schalke. The returnee among Germany’s elite is last in the table, but the hairy midfielder is starting regularly and his performance has risen.
“I’m open to pretty much everything. I’m not the type to be at one club for fifteen years. I want to try as many as possible to have a comparison of different competitions. I was in Russia, then a year in England, now I’m in Germany. The more experience I have, the better,” added King.
