José Mourinho took part in an interview with Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano. During the short interview, the Portuguese manager was asked about his current situation regarding his new engagement or the topic of national team football.

Mourinho’s latest engagement

José Mourinho spent 2 and a half years at AS Roma. He is currently the only manager in top football who has led his team to the European Cup final in the last 2 seasons. Once he could rejoice, the second time AS Rome fell to Sevilla of Spain.

However, the current season hasn’t gone well for Mourinho or the club, and so the sacking came at the beginning of January. AS Roma was only in 9th place in Serie A at the time. Moreover, it had won only 1 of its last 6 matches in the Italian league.

Club legend Danielle de Rossi took over the helm. The Portuguese could have scored a hat-trick in leading his club to the final in 3 consecutive seasons, unfortunately he didn’t have the time to do so.

Of course, the first question from the Italian journalist was directed at the return to the bench and if Mourinho misses the job. “When you’re at a club for a long time, you feel that you get tired of the work, that you need some time to think, to rest. When I was released from Roma, the next day I was ready to go train somewhere else,” the Portuguese replied.

Mourinho further elaborated on his answer, saying that he planned to start training in the summer, he already had some offers on the table, but he didn’t want to make any bad decisions. The Portuguese didn’t want to accept just any offer just to have an engagement and not be at home. The explanation is reasonable, as it’s hard to come to a club in the middle of the season and perform miracles.

Romano hasn’t forgotten about the speculation surrounding the coaching of the Portuguese national team. After the dismissal of coach Santos, it was Mourinho’s name that was frequently mentioned by the media. “In my career I had 2 offers to coach Portugal, the first time when I was at Real Madrid. Portugal offered me a part-time job, Fiorentino (Pérez) came to me and told me that it was not that easy, it was just not possible,” Mourinho said.

In his own words, the offer came a second time just after Santos was sacked, but Mourinho wanted to stay in Rome. In retrospect, he does not regret his decision. If a national team came to the Portuguese before the EURO or World Cup, he would have accepted immediately, but waiting 2 years to play for something is not for him. However, he leaves the door to national football open.

The last topic was Saudi Arabia, from which Mourinho received an offer from an unnamed club, but he wanted to fight for success in Europe. The Portuguese said that the door to the country was opened to players by Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the first to transfer. “I know from experience that you can never say never, so maybe one day I will be in Saudi Arabia,” José Mourinho concluded the interview.
