More viewers will be able to watch La Liga again, Health Minister confirms
Last season, only a very small handful of fans made it to the Spanish top flight matches. Most of the year was played without fans and the backdrop was only paper fans and chants playing from loudspeakers. Now things should start to get back to normal.

As many as 5,000 spectators were allowed into the stadium for the last two rounds of the last edition, and they were also able to watch Atlético Madrid triumph after 7 years. Certainly, Diego Simeone’s charges would love to celebrate in front of a full Wanda Metropolitano stadium, but they have to accept that more people can only enter the stands at the beginning of next season.
The current attendance rules can be seen at the European Championships, where 12 out of 60,000 fans, or only a fifth of the stadium, are allowed into Sevilla. Still, that’s slightly better than the original plan, which was to kick off in Bilbao behind closed doors. 20% might not be a reality for much longer, though.
According to La Liga president Javier Tebas, at least 70% of capacity could be available for the start of the new season in August. But he doesn’t expect it to be sold out during the season.
It remains to be seen how the current health minister, Carolina Darias, will approach the situation. In the meantime, she has lifted Article 15.2 on the ban on public access to professional football and basketball competitions.
In addition to Atlético Madrid, Spain also has Villarreal in the limelight this year, who managed to win the Europa League and will meet Chelsea in Belfast on August 11. More important at the moment, however, is that the fans are back in Spanish stadiums too.
