Memorable moments: Lampard scores Barcelona’s goal from an almost impossible angle
Frank Lampard has scored many fine goals in his career, but one stands out above the rest. It is his goal from the Champions League eighth-final against Barcelona, which he scored from an almost unresolvable angle.

In the 2006/2007 season, Chelsea were drawn in a difficult group in the Champions League. It had to go through Barcelona, Werder Bremen and Levski Sofia. However, they coped with the daunting task and advanced from first place to the knockout stages.
The matches against Barcelona were particularly interesting. Chelsea won the first one 1:0 at home thanks to a goal by Didier Drogba, while the second one ended in a 2:2 draw.
Both teams knew that the second match between them would probably decide who would advance from the first place in the group. So it was quite an important match, with the unpredictable Werder Bremen still pushing for the second place on points.
The match, played on 31 August, started better with Barcelona taking the lead in the third minute. Chelsea, however, equalised in the 52nd minute thanks to a Lampard goal, which we will analyse, however, Guðjohnsen gave the Spanish team the lead back six minutes later. Just when it looked like all three points would stay at Camp Nou, midfielder Didier Drogba equalised in the 93rd minute.
Frank Lampard’s equaliser was the most impressive of the match for the football world. It all came together in the 52nd minute when Lampard failed to reach a through pass into the box, forcing him to the goal line just outside the small area. However, this did not faze Lampard, who immediately tried to surprise goalkeeper Valdés with a curling shot from a zero angle.
To everyone’s surprise, the ball ended up in the net. Valdés certainly didn’t count on Lampard taking a shot, and he did so before Zambrotta could reach his opponent in time. The ball was still helped into the net by the bar.
This equaliser ultimately proved to be important, as it brought Chelsea an important point in the table, which they had been working towards for most of the match. As a result, they advanced to the knockout stage from first place.
Chelsea’s Champions League journey came to a halt in the semi-finals, where they fell to Liverpool on penalty kicks. Liverpool also took on Barcelona but were stopped in the eighth round.
