Wednesday saw some very interesting matches in the Champions League quarter-finals, but the English Premier League was also a thrilling spectacle. At Turf Moor, an important battle for survival between Burnley and Everton took place. For the home side, striker Matěj Vydra came on for the first time in a while and celebrated his return with an important assist.
Everton are experiencing a very bad season this year, Rafa Benítez has already been sacked, but the club’s situation is not getting any better for Frank Lampard either.
On Wednesday, the Toffees had a chance to get a valuable win at Burnley, another team threatened with relegation, but they didn’t take advantage of this opportunity.
The home side wasted no time, taking the lead in the 12th minute thanks to a Collins goal. For Everton, Richarlison turned the game around with two penalty kicks before half-time, but the visitors could not hold on to the promising result.
In the 57th minute Rodriguez equalised and at the very end of the match it was Matej Vydra’s turn.
The Czech striker has not played since 23 January due to health problems (first a groin hernia, then a dislocated elbow). However, he was already fit against Everton and his deployment proved to be a good choice.
In the 80th minute he replaced Weghorst on the pitch, 5 minutes later he found Cornet with a back pass in the whitewash and he made no mistake (in the video at 1:37).
Thanks to Vydra, the Clarets gained 3 very important points and climbed to 18th place, just one point away from yesterday’s opponent.
And Everton continue their misery. After Lampard lost 7 out of 9 league games, the team from Liverpool now faces a very difficult draw.
So the possibility of relegation for the Premier League regulars is a little more real again. If the Toffees want to avoid it they have to work hard. And ideally as soon as possible.
Their next opportunity will come on Saturday at home against Manchester United.
