Chelsea stayed at the top of the Premier League table. It managed to beat Watford, but its players worked hard for the win. The London team, led by Thomas Tuchel, won 2-1.
After half an hour, Mason Mount scored to put the table leaders in the lead. But Chelsea soon lost the lead. In the 43rd minute, Watford took the lead with a goal from Emmanuel Dennis. The score after the first half was 1-1.
Chelsea didn’t want a draw, but they couldn’t break through for long. Its rivals from Liverpool and Manchester City were leading in their matches. If Chelsea had lost points to Watford, they would have dropped from first place to third.
However, a drop down the table and a points loss at Watford’s ground was rejected by Hakim Ziyech. In the 72nd minute, he stepped up and hit a hard shot past the home goalkeeper. Chelsea went 2-1 up, a lead they would not lose for the rest of the match.
However, none of the goals were the most important moment. In the first half, there was an incident that made everyone flinch. The game was stopped for a Watford player to be treated. At that very moment, Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso looked up into the stands.
He noticed some commotion. One of the fans there had collapsed, probably a heart attack. Alonso alerted the referee and paramedics, who immediately went to the stands, where a fight for life began.
The match was abandoned. The players went to the booths to wait to see what would happen to the fan. The rescue took about half an hour, at which point the fan was stabilized. He was then transported to the hospital and the game was able to resume.
Despite this unpleasant incident, the match was played. Chelsea won 2-1, taking three points home and staying at the top of the table. Everyone can praise Marcos Alonso for his alertness and quickness which saved a life.
